Autumn: A Season of Paradox

Yet another season of markets has come to a close, and what an amazing year it’s been! The trees bend to left and right across the lines of straighter darker trees. They click upon themselves as the breeze rises, and turn many-colored as the stir cracks and crazes their enamel. Leaves are all dead on the ground, save those that the oak is keeping to ravel them one by one, and let them go scraping and creeping when others are sleeping. As the days grow shorter and the warmth of the day dissipates, so do the outdoor farmer’s markets seek refuge from the elements and move indoors for the latter portion of the autumn season and coming winter months. We look forward to this season of raindrops falling free from skies of cloudy gray, admiring each that comes to rest upon our faces, promising the unveiling of lucid petals flowering forth sweet nectar when the silvery winter melts into spring. When the season of new beginnings comes back around, we’ll return with it and all of our lovely outdoor farmer’s markets!

Chocolate Zucchini Cake

We will, similarly, be seeking shelter and hibernating through the winter months instead of  attending the winter markets. Though we’ll be absent, we welcome any and all orders or special requests you may have. Please feel free to contact us at 707-472-6291 or send us an email at christine@mendogfbakingco.com. We will deliver on Tuesday and Thursday in Mendocino between 12-12:30PM on Little Lake Road across from Zo’s just down the street from Mendosa’s, and in Fort Bragg between 1-1:30PM on the corner of Franklin Street and Laurel Street by the City Hall building. We’ll be baking Monday-Thursday and are happy to fill all of your requests, so don’t hesitate to contact us!

Mendocino Market Sandwich

Although we won’t be in attendance, please don’t hesitate to attend these wonderful community markets that provide fresh, organic produce and a plethora of delicious local goods every week. You can find the Caspar Farmer’s Market every Monday from 4:00-6:00PM in the Caspar Community Center, and the Fort Bragg Farmers Market every Wednesday from 3:00-5:00PM in the recreation gym at 213 Laurel St. just around the corner from City Hall. We’re sure you’ll discover and enjoy a bounty of amazing products at every market. For now, live in each season as it passes; breathe the air and taste the fruit! Thank you for all of your support! We couldn’t do any of this without you!

Reluctance

Out through the fields and the woods
   And over the walls I have wended;
I have climbed the hills of view
   And looked at the world, and descended;
I have come by the highway home,
   And lo, it is ended.
The leaves are all dead on the ground,
   Save those that the oak is keeping
To ravel them one by one
   And let them go scraping and creeping
Out over the crusted snow,
   When others are sleeping.
And the dead leaves lie huddled and still,
   No longer blown hither and thither;
The last lone aster is gone;
   The flowers of the witch hazel wither;
The heart is still aching to seek,
   But the feet question ‘Whither?’
Ah, when to the heart of man
   Was it ever less than a treason
To go with the drift of things,
   To yield with a grace to reason,
And bow and accept the end
   Of a love or a season?
